A self-taught Black and Indigenous American artist, Rye explores the physical and psychological boxes that constitute the American racial caste system, ranging from the ubiquitous racial identity checkboxes on forms to the lasting impact of redlined neighborhoods. His work questions the legitimacy of these boundaries, testing their viability and harnessing their own tools – barbed wire, traffic barriers, safety markers – for his own means.
